powerful words that make people buy

46 Awesome Words That Make People Buy!

As I’m sure you know, copywriting can be a tiny bit tricky from time to time…

Have you ever suffered from that frustrating disease we call ‘writers’ block’? Or had a certain word in the back of your head but couldn’t quite get it out ?

I’m sure you’ve all written copy before which reads pretty well, with a few fancy words in there – but it just wouldn’t make people jump out of their seats and run frantically for their credit card!

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

So imagine having a magical list of words up your sleeve – words that have been proven to make people buy products and services.

Words that you could sprinkle into any copy – ads, direct mail, press releases, websites, blogs, headlines, jingles, brochures etc – and every single time these same powerful words would massively boost the selling potential of your copy… Sounds pretty cool, right?

Well it’s not just a fantasy. We call them copywriting ‘power words’.

They automatically trigger certain emotions in the readers that make them want to buy. A definite must-know for any creative copywriter.

The list I’m going to show you is all thanks to Bob Kaslik, vice president of consumer marketing at Interweave Press, one of the nation’s leading multiplatform craft media companies with businesses in magazine and book publishing, interactive media, broadcast programming, and events for craft enthusiasts.

Bob shared with Mequoda Daily this list of power words that he says Interweave uses interchangeably for newsstand magazine cover lines, promotional copy, and email subject lives. Have a look and take it all in…

  1. Great list of words, i had never even thought of creating a list of power words. Now i dont have to – i hope you dont mind me stealing yours 🙂

  2. I wasn’t expecting to see “worst” on there and I still can’t think of how that could persuade someone to buy something. Can anyone give me a couple of suggestions before I go crazy trying to figure it out?

  3. I already use many of these in my web content writing and I didn’t even realize how powerful they really were! I will have to definitely incorporate the rest of them to better serve my clients.

  4. It’s no surprise that many of these have become popular in a lot of the highest ranking long tail keywords and will remain that way as our minds continue to perceive these words as important and give them a lot of purchasing power.

That’s true Sarah, when you read these words even just in a list like this (out of context), they still hold a certain power and connotation. Don’t you think?

  5. I think these can be some very effective words as long as a lot of them aren’t used together in copy that becomes to gimmicky and annoying. I do like that these are all words that many of us already use in our daily work.

  6. Hi,
I’m interested in copywriting for reason number three of your article “5 top reasons…”
Locations. I do not have any writing experience, other than high school English and a smattering of writing in College and University which was decades ago. So I thought that I would begin by finding an accredited copywriting course.
Any and all advice will be kindly considered.
I checked out AWAI online. And now discovered this site.
There is so much information out there and I want to make an informed decision.
I’m a Canadian currently residing in the USA but with family in both countries will be traveling between the 2 countries. It’s also been a dream of mine to travel this orb we call earth and explore it extensively.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
    Sincerely,
    Llyn

Is the Blackford Centre still offering the copywriting course? Do you know anything about that? I tried to contact them, but with no results. Their offer seems to be very attractive!

      Hi Milena
      Yes, they are!
I have no idea why they haven’t replied. Have you tried calling them too? They are definitely still offering the course, and still giving 10% off if you quote ‘The Creative Copywriter’… as I got an email from them just the other day. Just keep trying I guess!

An example would be is …..
The worst thing you could do to your furnace is not buy this product! Making it look as if you need product or it’ll be horrible! Or the worst thing you could do to your family is not have this water filtration system!
